Caught Doing the Right Thing
As a kid I remember that December was a time when I was particularly careful to try to “be good.” Santa was coming in a matter of weeks, and as was true in many families with young children, it was effective leverage to get this kid to be compliant with his parents! I’m older now, but there is still a desire to “be good” particularly when I seem to get something out of it, and there are negative consequences when I don’t! I believe that if we want to get beyond this carrot and stick approach to having a just society, we have to focus more on integrity. By integrity, I mean, integrating our beliefs and values into every aspect of our lives. That means I don’t do the right thing because I think someone is watching. It means I want to do the right thing regardless. That comes with freedom… including not having to worry about whether or not someone is watching! There will always be a need for legislation and making rules that guide society into just living. But Jesus teaches us that beyond the “rules” there is the motivation of doing what we know to be right… loving God, loving neighbor, loving ourselves.
