Advent Devotion: December 10, 2023
Isaiah 40:1-5
Many times we look at the Biblical word of God as an ancient text that is meant to be studied today. For the purpose of this devotion let us try to understand this ancient text as words by which we live. Isaiah harkins the people of Jerusalem to receive the comfort of God from the people of God. In this passage God not only invites Isaiah to remind Jerusalem that she is not being punished for sin, but also tells Isaiah how to speak to Jerusalem. How has God told you to speak to those who need comfort? What is the message you are to offer? Who has God called you to comfort? Speak to those who are (in) waiting, that they may hold on during this season.
Be reminded that while Isaiah was ministering and prophesying to the people of Jerusalem, God spoke directly to Isaiah first. The proclaimer of peace is never overlooked. The curator of comfort is never forgotten. In an act of helping yourself first before you attempt to help others, may you declare peace and comfort over yourself today.
Lord, I speak comfort over my spirit and soul today. I release all things that come to disrupt the comfort that you have sent my way. Amen.
