teaching tricky texts: owning the history, discerning god's future
The Bible is a difficult text. It is an ancient library of sources spanning many centuries and many genres, and it is very different from the other books we deal with today. As Christians, though, the Bible is central to our faith, and we cannot cast it aside.
This webinar series is designed to help ministry practitioners develop strategies for teaching some of the troubling passages of the Bible to today’s youth (and adults too)! We will focus on the texts that make us uncomfortable, those that we don’t always know what to do with.
Each week, we will be joined by a member of the faculty at San Francisco Theological Seminary who will help us think through how to approach the text from different angles. You are encouraged to attend all three sessions, but you are welcome at any and all of them! All levels of experience with teaching the Bible are welcome. No previous experience is assumed.
April 8th at 4pm EST – Contextualizing the Story with Jon Berquist, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Hebrew Bible
What does a historical and context-based approach to the Bible look like?
April 15th at 4pm EST – Liberating the Story with Joanne Whitt, Adjunct Professor of Homiletics
What does a postcolonial or liberation approach to the Bible look like?
April 22nd at 4pm EST – Grounding the Story with Greg Love, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology.
What does an environmental approach to the Bible look like?
