YMCo Youth Mission Scholar Program
The Youth Mission Co Mission Scholar program is a year-long intensive program for 9th-12th grade youth who are interested in diving deeply into mission, service, the root causes of social injustices, and discernment regarding God’s call in their lives. This applicant would be part of a cohort of local students who would participate in the program together, as well as getting connected with fellow mission scholars from across the country. Mission Scholar Program Overview
Description: A year long “deep dive” into mission and personal discernment for a select group of high school youth from around the country.
Participant Profile: A 9th-12th grade youth who is passionate about serving and wants to engage in a deeper understanding of mission, the root causes of social injustices, and God’s call in their life to address these issues.
Focus areas include –
Education:
- on topics such as homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, healthcare, and other social concerns.
- on the root causes of these issues, their history, and the systems that perpetuate them
Experience: Working among neighbors who are marginalized and working within agencies supporting them in the participant’s home context, as well as engaging with mission and justice leaders from across the country.
Theology: A deep and ongoing study of Scripture including God’s call to support and stand with the marginalized.
Discernment: Of God’s call in the participant’s life to help marginalized and oppressed people, including exploration of the participant’s field of study, vocation, and life goals
Connection:
- With other mission scholars from across the country
- leaders of community agencies (locally and nationally)
- Community organizers and theologians
- the Youth Mission Co staff, including Rev. Bill Buchanan, Executive Director
Program Elements:
- An initial group experience of Mission Immersion with their fellow mission scholars in a local cohort led by a YMCo trained Facilitator and Assistant Facilitator.
- Monthly zoom meetings with the mission scholars, including special guest speakers and planned discussions.
- Ongoing mission engagement in their own community throughout the year, as determined in a mission immersion plan set at the beginning of the process.
- Monthly meetings with a designated local mentor to debrief and discuss their local engagement.
- A weekend mission immersion with their fellow mission scholars and YMCo Facilitators
- A Mission Presentation that they would develop throughout the year focused on a particular issue (homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, etc) that would include their personal experiences engaging in this issue, the history of this issue, the systems and dynamics that perpetuate the issue, keys to solving the issue, and their theology related to the issue. This would be a presentation that would be given in their home context as well as to their fellow scholars.

Program Cost: $100/month (12 month program)
Cost includes
- Initial Mission Immersion Experience (or alternate cohort experience)
- Mid-year Mission Immersion Weekend
- Closing Mission Immersion Experience
- Staffing for all zoom calls and guest speakers
- Consultation for creative project
- One on one consultation with YMCo Exec. Director, Bill Buchanan
Attendance and Payment Policies
Participant attendance at both “in person events” and zoom calls is crucial for the success of the program and the transformation of the young person. Participants who miss more than one of the three in person events will not be considered as completing the program. Likewise, if a participant misses more than three of the online meetings, the participant will not be considered as completing the program. Payment of the first quarter registration is due within two weeks of acceptance into the program. Failure to make quarterly registration payments may mean not completing the program.
